Whom should I make friends with? I am left alone, old and old. Even the pine trees on the beach, famous for their long life, are not my old friends.
This poem was written by Fujiwara no Kofu in the early 10th century. There is a strong sense of loneliness in the poem, with no one to talk to. The image of pines on the beach and the smell of the sea in the sea breeze enhances the sense of loneliness.
Proceeds from the sale will help run my private school for children, where I teach mathematics and Japanese calligraphy.
